Hezbollah will be on the side of army: top Lebanese MP

BEIRUT – Hezbollah will stand on the side of the Lebanese army to counter Israeli threats, Chairman of the Hezbollah faction in Lebanon’s parliament Mohammed Hassan Raad said on Thursday.

“The deployment of Lebanon’s army (in south) with the aim of defending Lebanese is just an internal issue and the ‘resistance’ is a power in Lebanon which is on the side of the Lebanese army in the face of any aggression by Israel,” he told the Mehr News Agency.

He said the keeping of arms by Hezbollah resistance movement has nothing to do with foreigners and it is just an internal issue.

“The issue of Hezbollah’s arms is totally an internal affair and has no connection to resolution 1701 or to the foreign countries,” he said.

The top lawmaker stated that the implementation of any decision is actually dependent on a consensus between all political groups or factions in Lebanon and any decisions outside this framework will fail to succeed. Asked whether Hezbollah will finally join the Lebanese army, he said, “Currently, there is no such a discussion. However, defending Lebanon and how to defend Lebanon in the future is open to study.”

The faction leader also dismissed some statements that the capture of the two Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah triggered a war against Lebanon by Tel Aviv.

He said there were many reasons for the war, adding that Israel had not yet forgotten the defeat at the hands of Hezbollah which led to its withdrawal from south Lebanon in 2000 after 22 years of occupation.

He said another reason behind the attack was the implementation of the “New Middle East” plan proposed by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. The MP also cited “inciting sectarian conflict” between Lebanese religious groups as another motivation for starting the war.

However, the war strengthened unity of Lebanese nations” Raad opined.

He also added the myth of invincibility of the Israeli army led the Zionist regime to go wild and destroy Lebanon’s infrastructure.

Dismissal of interference by Iran The MP dismissed allegation that Iran is interfering in Lebanon’s internal affairs, saying such accusations “show the anger and fury of the U.S. against the Islamic Republic.” The lawmaker said “Iran is a friend and a brother to Lebanon.” Asked about the amount of destruction in Lebanon in Israeli-Hezbollah war, the lawmaker said that the destruction was “massive.”

Lots of houses were ruined and there are almost no more bridges in Lebanon, he said, adding that the factories and commercial centers have also been massively damaged.

This shows that the war was a wild and barbaric one, but yet the resistant movements countered the enemies and did not allow them to reach their goals, he stated. Asked about the U.S. readiness to send aids to Lebanon, he said, “We condemn this rudeness of the U.S. On the one hand it sends bombs and missiles for Israel to kill innocent people and on the other hand it tries to cover its shame with trivial financial helps.”

The U.S. is seeking to justify its hostile positions, but the Lebanese people will never accept the help, he added.
